Ah, spring... so happy that you're here!
As the plants and flowers begin their rebirth, I find this is a good time for us humans, too, to reflect on the past season and set intentions for what we want in the future. If you know me, you know that I love to reflect and change ALL the time but especially now because the first day of Spring is the day before my birthday!
I've always treated my birthday like my own personal new year. But did you know that many early civilizations actually started their new year at the spring solstice? Even if they didn't have a written calendar, they were in-tune to their surroundings and knew when the amount of daylight began to be more than the amount of darkness and the world of plants and animals were changing.
This year is special, though. Not only will the sun set exactly 12 hours after it rises, we also have a full moon! This has happened only 5 times since 1809 (according to The Farmer's Almanac). And, not only is it a full...
I've got to admit it... I've been a little chia crazy lately. With all of it's amazing health benefits, I'm not feeling bad about it AT ALL.
Not only are the tiny little seeds chock full of nutrition like omega 3's, antioxidants, fiber, iron and calcium, just 2 tablespoons contains a good amount of fat and protein!
If you're following a low carbohydrate diet like me, making sure to get adequate amounts of fat and protein will keep you feeling full longer- and help to cut carbohydrate cravings.
Chia seeds are also loaded with fiber- and we all know how important fiber is for gut health. That same 2 tbls serving boosts 10 grams of fiber- almost half the daily recommendation for a woman over 50 years old!
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Nutrient Database, a 2tbls serving of chia seeds contains:
I have never in my life had a problem sleeping. Like ever. It was always one of my most favorite things to do!
These past few months, though, have been ROUGH.
Tossing and turning all night with crazy anxiety dreams- it's like I live this whole other life at night that is filled with all of these constant issue that I have to solve!
Instead of waking up rested, I often start my day with pounding headaches. I have black, puffy bags under my eyes that even other people are commenting on.
Naturally, this is completely unacceptable for me. So I've started a mission to get to the why of sleep problems and correct them.
The start of 2019 began some big changes for me. I quit, cold turkey, 2 of my biggest addictions- sugar & coffee. Mainly because, by this time, I was beginning to notice the sleep issues and was hoping quitting those 2 biggies would correct it.
I have lost 40lbs (hurray!) and can get my day started without the need for caffeine (huge)...
As a massage therapist with over 16 years experience, I believe that self massage at home should be an important part of your daily wellness routine. Just like you brush your teeth to prevent cavities, incorporating massage into your everyday life will help to prevent pain!
Not only does self massage help prevent and decrease pain (and maintain the benefits of massage between appointments), it helps increase your awareness of where the pain originates and what is causing it. Awareness is vital (and the first step) when trying to make changes to overcome any kind of pain or discomfort.
Throughout the years, I've tried lots of self-care massage tools to use on myself at home in between my own massage appointments. These are the tools I keep on hand and use most frequently as well as recommend to my clients.
Simple and safe, these self-care massage tools can be used anywhere! They travel easily (just keep them in your bag) or have them on hand in the places you will...
“How do you do it?!” If I had a dollar for every time I was asked this question, you wouldn’t be reading this because I’d be on my own private island somewhere with no wifi and a rum & coke in my hand :)
Seriously, though. How do I do it? How do I manage the demands of mom life (with 3 kids), a husband (kid #4) a house AND run a business- and maintain the image of having it “all together”? The thing is, I don’t always have it all together. It’s not always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes my life is a total shitstorm (literally) and THAT'S OK. For those of you who really want to know, continue on to get a glimpse of my process for "how I do it".
This is in direct alignment with my favorite personal motto: Feel...
